The Black Brant could very well become the flagship of your rocket fleet. The Black Brant is a Canadian-designed sounding rocket built by Bristol Aerospace in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Over 800 Black Brants of various versions have been launched since they were first produced in 1961, and the type remains one of the most popular sounding rockets ever built. They have been repeatedly used by the Canadian Space Agency and NASA. Black Brant was the result of research at CARDE during the 1950s into the nature of the upper atmosphere as part of ongoing research into anti-ballistic missile systems and very-long-range communication. In 1957 CARDE contracted Bristol to produce a simple rocket fuselage, called the Propulsion Test Vehicle, for studies into high-power solid fuels. The resulting design was able to accommodate a wide variety of engine burning times, propellant loadings and launch angles in keeping with its role as a test vehicle for ABM systems development. The first test flight took place only two years later from Fort Churchill in September 1959.

The Madcow Rocketry 4" diameter Black Brant II is a high-power model. The kit comes with fiberglass tubes, fins, tailcone, bulkplates and nose cone, avionics bay for dual deployment, rail buttons and nylon shock cord and vinyl decal sheet.

This is an advanced kit.
You may need to adjust CG and either friction-fit your motor or use the retainer. Epoxy can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Adult supervision and wearing rubber gloves is recommended when working with epoxy. You need to sand the fiberglass nose cone and other fiberglass parts. Watch out for the fiberglass strands sticking up inside the nose cone and tail cone - they are glass. Wear a particle mask to avoid breathing in the fiberglass dust. This kit is a big rocket, which requires extra safety precautions when flown. Patience and acquired flying skills to know when NOT to fly are just as important as quality construction techniques.

This kit does not include an engine retention system. It is up to the builder to provide for motor retention. We recommend the 54mm diameter Aero Pack Engine Retainers (54P, or 54 flange retainer). They also give any rocket an extra professional-looking appearance.
